AI roast generator apps compared: we tested the top Android picks
Disclosure first: we make Roastify, one of the apps below. That is exactly why we tried to make this fair. Every app got the same input, on the same phone, on the same day, on its free tier, and we show the actual results, including where our own app falls short.
How we tested
- When and where: November 5, 2026, on an Android phone. We picked apps from the top US Google Play results for "ai roast generator", "ai roast" and "roast". RoastGPT ranks first for two of them, but its service was down all day, so we tested the next app in line, Roast Bot, and describe RoastGPT separately.
- Same text for every app: "My roommate never washes his dishes", at each app's closest setting to a savage, high-heat roast.
- Same photo for apps with photo roasts: an AI-generated mirror selfie (gym tank top, backwards cap, a pile of laundry, a protein shaker). No real person.
- Free tier only. No accounts, no sign-ins, no purchases, no free trials.
- What we judged: the roast itself, how it looks and feels, how smooth it is, the friction before you get a roast (ads, prompts, paywalls), how you share it, and how it handles safety.

Roastify (ours)

What it is: text roasts, optional photo roasts, comebacks (three replies to an insult) and Screen Time roasts. You pick a style (8), a level (Medium to Nuclear), who it's for (sibling, boss, ex...) and a roast language from 20+, written natively rather than translated.
The text roast (Savage, Extreme):
"Even the sink has stopped expecting basic consideration from you. Your dishes turned neglect into the strongest evidence against your character."
It hits the roommate directly and stays on the dishes. It's sharp, though a little wordy.
The photo roast (same selfie):
"That laundry pile makes your bedroom look like a lost-and-found after closing. Your standards got misplaced before the camera came out."
It picked a choice in the photo (the laundry pile), not the person's body. Roastify is built never to roast bodies, and it refuses photos with children.
Where it falls short:
- One roast per generation. Roast App: Roastify gives you five; here you tap Try Again for another.
- Coins and a daily popup. New users start with 5 coins and everyone gets 5 free coins every day; a text roast costs 1 and a photo roast 2. The app opens with a daily reward board (an extra free drop for bonus coins), which is one more tap before your first roast.
- Slower: about 10 seconds for text and 19 for a photo.
- Ads: a banner ad on the result screen.
Sharing: an image card with the roast, roastify.ai and a "Get the app" QR code. Photo roasts have an "Include photo when sharing" switch with a consent reminder.
Good for: a specific roast that fits the person, in their own language, with control over style and heat, and without body jokes.
Roast Bot: AI Roast Generator (Artmvstd)

What it is: the next app after the big two for "ai roast generator". It is the most polished-looking of the four: a short onboarding, then three clear choices, Upload Screenshot, Upload Face and Describe a Person. You get intensity and length sliders and a style row, and there are no ads in sight.
Friction: a paywall appears right after onboarding, offering a 3-day free trial that turns into a weekly subscription. You can close it with the ✕ in the corner (it appears after a few seconds). You then get 3 free roasts, and only the Friendly style is free; Savage, Playful and Sarcastic need Pro. After our second roast, the app asked for a Play Store rating.
The text roast (Friendly, intensity 100%):
"I'm starting to think your roommate doesn't wash his dishes because he's secretly cultivating a new ecosystem in there, and frankly, I'm just waiting for him to discover a cure for the common cold or perhaps a new species of sentient mold."
Creative, but long, gentle, and about the roommate rather than at him. That is partly because only the Friendly style is free.
The photo roast (same selfie):
"Nice selfie, bro! I see you've mastered the 'just rolled out of bed after a 12-hour gym session' look, complete with the strategically placed laundry pile. Just don't forget to actually put those clothes away, or they might start developing their own muscles."
It worked from the photo and picked the laundry pile. A second photo roast leaned slightly on the body ("more reps than your biceps").
Sharing: a clean image card with the roast and a Roast Bot watermark (Pro removes it), shown as a preview before the share sheet. Tap any roast to copy it.
Good for: a tidy, ad-free experience and screenshot roasts, if you're happy with gentle roasts or ready to pay.
AI Roast Generator (FullStackPathway)

What it is: the top result for "ai roast generator". It is a chat window: type anything, get a reply. There are no styles, levels or photo roasts, and a 4,000-character box.
The roast:
"Sounds like your roommate's idea of 'cleaning' is just waiting for the dishes to self-clean! Maybe you should start charging them rent for all that extra time they're taking up in the sink!"
It was fast and friendly, but it talks to you about your roommate rather than roasting them, and there is no way to turn the heat up.
Friction: a notification permission prompt at launch, and a large ad covering half the screen right behind it (one stray tap opened a browser page). Banner ad at the bottom.
Sharing: Copy only, next to Buy Me A Coffee, Telegram and WhatsApp channel links.
Good for: quick, gentle lines for people who don't want to deal with settings.
Roast App: Roastify (petraapps)

Not to be confused with us: this is a different app from a different developer with a similar name.
What it is: a photo-first roaster. You must add a photo to get a roast (selfies, group shots or chat screenshots), then pick Toast, Sizzle or Inferno, with Oblivion behind Pro. It's clean and light, and you start with 5 credits.
The roasts (Inferno, our test selfie): five at once, which is generous.
"That selfie angle is doing you zero favors. You look like a thumb with anxiety who just discovered the gym."
That one is genuinely funny. Most of the others went after the body ("your veins look like they're trying to escape that tank top", "get a load of these pythons"), and one was a crude "your mom" joke.
Friction: a full-screen interstitial with a close button appeared before the results, about 15 seconds in all.
Sharing: the best share card in this test. "Share Results" builds an image with the full photo, the roast as a caption and a badge, and lets you page through all five.
Good for: quick photo roasts with lots of options and a ready-made share card, if you're fine with body jokes.
Also worth a look (not tested hands-on)
- RoastGPT (Lit Publishing, 4.2 from 465 ratings, 50K+): ranks first for "roast" and "ai roast", with text, comeback and image roasts, 16 character styles and 10 languages. On our test day every attempt failed with a server error saying its AI provider credit had run out, so we could not judge its roasts. We will add it once it works again.
- Roast App - AI Roast - ClapBack (EXCITING., 5K+ installs): roast battles against AI characters, plus a "gossip and roast together" mode. It's a different idea: practice trading insults rather than generating one.
Which one should you use?
- You want a roast written for the person, in your language, with control over heat, and no body shaming: Roastify.
- You want lots of photo roasts fast, with a ready share card: Roast App: Roastify (petraapps), if body jokes don't bother you.
- You want gentle, quick lines with zero setup: AI Roast Generator.
- You want a tidy, ad-free app and roasts of chat screenshots: Roast Bot, if gentle roasts are enough or you'll pay for the savage styles.
A note on roasting well
The best roasts land on a choice someone made (the laundry pile, the camera angle, the dishes in the sink), not on things they can't change. Keep it for people who can take it, and skip anyone under 18.
